Reduce the risk with five steps Cover your cough Wash your hands Keep your distance Know the signs of flu Stay at home

Information for the business sector, employers and employees

Planning and preparation is essential to minimise the risk for your business or workplace. A pandemic would cause more people than normal (possibly up to half the workforce) to be away from work for periods of time. Workers may need time off because they are sick, in quarantine, caring for someone who is sick, or caring for children if schools are closed.

Building confidence in your staff and customers to continue to work or engage with your business is critical to limiting the impact of an influenza pandemic. All businesses should plan to implement clearly identifiable measures to reduce the risk of staff and customers catching the flu. Make sure people know that your business is pandemic prepared.

Medical Certificates

As the number of people with pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza increases, so too does the pressure on medical facilities and GPs.

During the pandemic, employers are urged to be flexible about the need for medical certificates from employees who are ill with flu symptoms, or who are caring for ill family members.

Consider accepting a Statutory Declaration from staff on return to work instead.
